What Are the Five Elements (Ohaeng)?
Everything in Saju is made of five elemental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water (Mok, Hwa, To, Geum, Su). These five forces create (support) and destroy (check) each other, driving all transformation in the universe.
The Five Elements aren't just physical substances — they represent "qualities of energy." Wood is "the energy of growth," Fire is "the energy of expansion," Earth is "the energy of stability," Metal is "the energy of contraction," and Water is "the energy of flow."
Element Personalities at a Glance
Kindness · Initiative
Brightness · Impulsive
Reliable · Stubborn
Deep Thinking · Change
The Creation Cycle (Sangsaeng)
The Creation Cycle is a "mother-to-child" relationship. One element feeds energy to the next, helping it grow. In Saju, creation relationships mean support, nurture, and growth.
When the element that "creates" you is strong in your chart, it's called Inseong (印星, Resource Star) — meaning strong support from mothers, mentors, and patrons. When the element you "create" is strong, it's called Siksang (食傷, Output Star) — meaning outstanding expressiveness and creativity.
The Destruction Cycle (Sanggeuk)
The Destruction Cycle is a "control and restraint" relationship. And despite the scary name, destruction isn't always bad! Healthy restraint creates balance and regulates excess energy.
If Fire burns too hot, Water must cool it. If Wood grows unchecked, Metal must prune it. Destruction is "restraint for balance." In Saju, the element that controls you is called Gwanseong (官星, Authority Star) — representing career, discipline, and social order. Healthy Gwanseong actually drives promotion and success.
Element Compatibility in Relationships
Five Element principles apply directly to human relationships. Comparing your element with someone else's reveals your interpersonal chemistry.
| My Element | Their Element | Relationship | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🌳 Wood | 🌊 Water | Creation (receiving) | They nurture my growth — a strong supporter |
| 🌳 Wood | 🔥 Fire | Creation (giving) | I pour energy into them — devotion and fulfillment |
| 🌳 Wood | 🏔️ Earth | Destruction (I control) | I lead this relationship — exercise leadership |
| 🌳 Wood | ⚔️ Metal | Destruction (controlled) | They refine me — challenging but growth-inducing |
| 🌳 Wood | 🌳 Wood | Same element | Peers and rivals — empowering yet competitive |
What Happens When Elements Are Imbalanced?
Too Much of One Element
- Excess Wood: Stubborn, won't listen to others
- Excess Fire: Emotional rollercoaster, impulsive actions
- Excess Earth: Overthinking, indecisive, fears change
- Excess Metal: Cold, critical, inflexible
- Excess Water: Melancholic, anxious, hard to focus
Too Little of One Element
- Lacking Wood: Low drive, low confidence → Try gardening, green colors
- Lacking Fire: Low passion, poor social skills → Try exercise, bright lighting
- Lacking Earth: Restless, insecure → Try routine, meditation
- Lacking Metal: Indecisive, can't finish things → Try organizing, simplifying
- Lacking Water: Inflexible, low creativity → Try swimming, listening to music
The ideal Saju chart has elements evenly distributed with creation and destruction working in healthy harmony. But perfect balance is extremely rare — most people lean one way or another. That's why the core of Saju analysis is finding "how to fill what's lacking and reduce what's excessive." This concept is called Yongshin (用神, Useful God) — your chart's most needed element.
Career Aptitude by Five Elements
In Saju, your dominant element reveals your innate aptitudes and career direction. Based on your Day Master (Ilgan) and the strongest or most needed element in your chart, you can identify which professional fields suit you best. While a single element doesn't determine your entire career path, understanding your energy profile is a powerful guide to finding work that fits your nature.
| Element | Aptitude Keywords | Matching Careers |
|---|---|---|
| Wood 🌳 | Growth, planning, language | Strategist, writer, educator, humanities, journalism, startups |
| Fire 🔥 | Expression, passion, outreach | Artist, broadcaster, marketer, entertainment, designer |
| Earth 🏔️ | Stability, trust, management | Real estate, civil service, education, agriculture, brokerage |
| Metal ⚔️ | Logic, precision, decisiveness | Lawyer, accountant, IT engineer, finance, surgeon |
| Water 🌊 | Research, intuition, flexibility | Researcher, psychologist, physician, philosopher, content creator |
Most Saju charts have 2–3 elements working together. For example, if both Wood and Fire are strong, the combination of "planning + expression" makes you an excellent fit for content strategy, producing, or creative direction.
Health & Wellness by Five Elements
In Eastern medicine, each element corresponds to specific organs and body systems. The organs linked to your weakest element tend to be your lifelong vulnerable areas, while organs tied to an overly strong element may become hyperactive. Knowing your elemental balance points you toward preventive health care.
| Element | Linked Organs | Related Body Parts | Wellness Tips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood 🌳 | Liver, gallbladder | Eyes, muscles, nails | Sour foods, leafy greens, stretching |
| Fire 🔥 | Heart, small intestine | Tongue, blood vessels, face | Cardio exercise, bitter foods, quality sleep |
| Earth 🏔️ | Stomach, spleen | Lips, flesh, digestive tract | Regular meals, moderate natural sweets, walking |
| Metal ⚔️ | Lungs, large intestine | Nose, skin, body hair | Breathing exercises, moderate spicy food, stay moisturized |
| Water 🌊 | Kidneys, bladder | Ears, bones, hair | Keep lower body warm, limit salt, stay hydrated |
The organs linked to your weakest element are your lifelong vulnerable spots. For instance, someone lacking Water should watch their kidneys, bladder, and lower back, while someone weak in Metal is more susceptible to lung, bronchial, and skin issues. Conversely, an overabundant element can cause its linked organs to become hyperactive, leading to inflammation or dysfunction. Understanding your elemental balance and practicing the wellness tips for your weak element is the starting point of preventive health in Eastern medicine.
