What is Saju? A Complete Beginner's Guide to Korean Astrology

You've Probably Heard of It

If you've spent any time in Korea — or explored K-culture online — you've likely come across Saju. Koreans consult Saju before weddings, when naming babies, during New Year, and even before major career moves. It's woven into the fabric of everyday life.

But what exactly is Saju? And how is it different from the zodiac signs or horoscopes you might be familiar with? Let's break it down from the very beginning.

Saju (四柱): The Four Pillars

The word Saju (四柱, sa-ju) literally means "Four Pillars." These four pillars are derived from the exact moment you were born: your Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth.

Each pillar contains two characters: a Heavenly Stem (천간, Cheongan) on top and an Earthly Branch (지지, Jiji) on the bottom. Four pillars × two characters = eight characters total. That's why the full name is Saju Palja (四柱八字) — literally "Four Pillars, Eight Characters."

Ding (丁)
Hai (亥)

Day Pillar
Gap (甲)
O (午)

Month Pillar
Gi (己)
Sa (巳)

Year Pillar
Eul (乙)
Chuk (丑)

Heavenly Stems = Heaven's energy  |  Earthly Branches = Earth's energy
4 pillars × 2 characters = 8 characters (Palja)

Think of it this way:
Your Saju chart is a "cosmic snapshot" of the exact moment you were born. The energies of heaven and earth at that moment are encoded in eight characters — and reading those characters is what Saju analysis is all about.

Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches

The eight characters in your Saju chart come from combinations of 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches.

10 Heavenly Stems (천간, Cheongan)

Gap, Eul, Byeong, Jeong, Mu, Gi, Gyeong, Sin, Im, Gye
(甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸)

Each stem carries one of the Five Elements in either Yin or Yang form. For example, Gap (甲) is "Yang Wood" — like a tall tree reaching upward, symbolizing growth and ambition.

12 Earthly Branches (지지, Jiji)

Ja, Chuk, In, Myo, Jin, Sa, O, Mi, Sin, Yu, Sul, Hae
(子 丑 寅 卯 辰 巳 午 未 申 酉 戌 亥)

You might recognize these as the 12 Korean zodiac animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger...). The Earthly Branches encode seasons, directions, and time periods — carrying richer information than the Stems.

The Five Elements: Saju's DNA

To understand Saju, you need to know the Five Elements (오행, Ohaeng) — a foundational concept not just in Saju, but in all of East Asian philosophy.

First, there's Yin and Yang (음양) — the principle that everything in nature exists in complementary pairs: day and night, hot and cold, active and restful.

Then come the Five Elements — five types of energy that make up the world:

🌳
Wood
목 (Mok)
Growth
🔥
Fire
화 (Hwa)
Passion
🏔️
Earth
토 (To)
Stability
⚔️
Metal
금 (Geum)
Precision
💧
Water
수 (Su)
Wisdom

Each of your eight characters belongs to one of these elements. The balance (or imbalance) between them — whether they support each other or clash — shapes your personality, talents, and life trajectory according to Saju theory.

Key takeaway:
Saju analysis starts with one question: "How are the Five Elements distributed in my eight characters?" A balanced chart isn't necessarily "better" — but knowing which elements are strong or weak in your chart is the first step toward self-understanding.

A Thousand Years of History

Saju's roots trace back to ancient astronomical observations in East Asia. But the system we know today was shaped by two key figures:

Li Xuzhong — Tang Dynasty, ~800 CE

He proposed that a person's destiny could be understood through three pillars: the Year, Month, and Day of birth. This "Three Pillar Method" was the earliest form of Saju.

Xu Ziping — Song Dynasty, ~1000 CE

He added the crucial fourth pillar — the birth hour — and established the Day Pillar (your birth day) as the center of analysis. The framework he created is essentially the same system used today, over 1,000 years later.

Saju reached Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and is first documented in the Joseon Dynasty records from 1401. Over the centuries, it evolved into a uniquely Korean practice — so deeply embedded in the culture that millions still consult Saju readers before weddings, job changes, and other major life decisions.

Saju vs. Western Astrology

"The East has Saju; the West has astrology." Both systems analyze personality and destiny based on when you were born, but their approaches are quite different.

Aspect Saju (Four Pillars) Western Astrology
Foundation Yin-Yang + Five Elements 12 Zodiac signs + Planetary positions
Calendar Lunisolar (60-year cycle) Solar (tropical zodiac)
Structure 4 pillars × 2 chars = 8 characters 12 houses + planetary placements
Variations ~13 million combinations ~500 chart types
Philosophy Confucian/Daoist (fate + effort) Psychological (free will focus)
Cycles 10-year "Luck Cycles" + yearly Planetary transits (continuous)
Remedies Feng Shui, naming, element balance Crystals, meditation, conscious choice

The most striking difference? Precision. Western astrology offers about 500 chart variations, while Saju generates roughly 13 million unique combinations from its Stem-Branch system. This allows for far more personalized and nuanced readings.

Note:
Saju and Western astrology aren't competitors — they're complementary. At Mystic Universe, we cross-reference Saju results with Western zodiac data for deeper, more rounded insights. The best of both worlds.

What Can Saju Tell You?

Saju is not a crystal ball that "predicts the future." It's better understood as a framework for self-discovery rooted in traditional philosophy. Here's what a Saju reading can explore:

  • Innate personality & temperament: Are you a natural leader or a strategic advisor? Energetic or contemplative?
  • Talents & career aptitude: Which fields align with your elemental strengths?
  • Relationship patterns: Who you naturally click with — and where friction tends to arise
  • Life phases (Luck Cycles): Major energy shifts that occur in roughly 10-year periods
  • Annual fortune: What opportunities or challenges a particular year may bring
  • Compatibility: How two people's charts complement or challenge each other

How to Get Started

To get a Saju reading, you need your exact birth date and time. The birth hour is especially important — without it, you're missing 25% of your chart (the entire Hour Pillar).

Even without a birth time, a basic reading is still possible. But for the most accurate results, check with your parents or birth records to confirm the hour.

In the next guide, we'll dive deeper into the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — what each one means, how they connect to the Five Elements, and why understanding them completely changes how you read a Saju chart.
