Geokguk in Saju

Does Direct Officer mean civil service, or Eating God mean a creative career? A job chart can hide what Geokguk is actually for: organizing a whole Saju reading. Geokguk is not a verdict that assigns one profession to a person. It is a traditional way to decide which relationships in the eight characters deserve to be read first.

This guide asks one question: how much can a structure name tell us, and where must the whole chart take over? We will connect the common method for forming a candidate from the Month Branch with the checks that stop that candidate from becoming a personality label or prediction.

The short answer: Geokguk is not a final classification

Geokguk (格局), often shortened to Geju in Chinese-language material, can be understood as the pattern or frame of a chart. Zi Ping traditions use the Day Master as the reference point and the Month Branch as the seasonal anchor, then compare its Hidden Stems with what appears in the visible Heavenly Stems. This creates a working structure for reading the other characters; it does not let one character replace them.

If the four pillars themselves are unfamiliar, begin with the Saju foundation guide. Geokguk is not another star pasted onto the chart. It is a frame for deciding the order in which the existing Stems, Branches, and relationships should be tested.

Why the Month Branch comes first: season sets the environment

The Month Branch marks the seasonal environment at birth. The same phase operates differently when spring supports it, autumn constrains it, or the chart gives it no roots. Classical authors therefore treated the Month Command as the chart’s guiding outline. Zi Ping Zhen Quan begins its structure discussion from the Month Command, but it also tells the reader to weigh every year, month, day, and hour character against that center.

A Month Branch can contain more than one Hidden Stem. Schools differ over main, middle, and residual qi, the exact calendar divisions assigned to each, and which exposed stem receives priority when several appear. Looking only at the main qi and calling the result universally final is too narrow. So is deleting an unexposed Hidden Stem from the chart. A four-step method for forming a structure candidate

A useful beginner rule is: form a candidate from a Hidden Stem of the Month Branch that becomes visible in the Heavenly Stems, then name its Ten-God relationship to the Day Master. If Xin Metal exposed from a Month Branch is Direct Officer to a Jia Wood Day Master, Direct Officer becomes a candidate structure. The Ten-God calculation itself is explained in the Ten Gods guide.

Eight relationship structures plus Jian Lu and Yang Blade

When the Month Command relates to the Day Master through a different phase, the usual eight names are Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Resource, and Indirect Resource. When the seasonal center belongs to the same phase as the Day Master, traditions discuss Jian Lu, Month Rob Wealth, or Yang Blade. Lists that call these the “ten standard structures” do not always draw those Self-group boundaries in exactly the same way.

Direct Officer does not make a civil servant, and Hurting Officer does not make a rebel. Authority might appear as an institutional duty, a family standard, professional accountability, or harsh self-monitoring. Which expression is supported depends on placement, strength, connections, timing, education, opportunity, and actual choices. A structure name selects the next question; it does not answer a résumé.

Formation and breakage describe conditions, not human worth

Traditional structure analysis asks how the Month-Command function combines with the rest of the chart. Does Wealth generate Officer? Does Resource protect or redirect Authority? Is Seven Killings regulated by Output or transformed through Resource? The focus is not the presence of a label but whether support, regulation, and transformation form a coherent path.

This is why “formed” and “broken” are technical descriptions, not grades assigned to a person. It is also unsafe to say that any clash touching the Month Branch instantly destroys the structure. Sanming Tonghui distinguishes where and when a clash occurs rather than treating every clash as the same switch. A clash is evidence of change or tension to evaluate, not an automatic invalidation. Geokguk, Day-Master strength, and Yongsin ask different questions

The legacy article separated Geokguk as career and social success from strength-based Yongsin as inner balance. That division is attractive because it is simple, but it is not a stable rule. In older structure writing, Yongsin can mean the usable function sought from the Month Command. In many modern strength or climate methods, Yongsin means the phase chosen to regulate imbalance, heat, cold, dryness, or flow. The same term can point to different operations.

State the method before comparing answers. Day-Master support is treated separately in the strong and weak Saju guide, while strength, climate, structure, and bridging approaches are separated in the Yongsin guide. None of these lenses makes the other two unnecessary.

Jia Wood in Rooster month: stop at “Direct Officer candidate”

Suppose the Day Master is Jia Wood (甲) and the Month Branch is Rooster (酉). The central Hidden Stem of Rooster is Xin Metal (辛). Xin controls Jia and has the opposite polarity, so its Ten-God relationship is Direct Officer. If Xin also appears in a visible year, month, or hour stem, Direct Officer becomes a strong structure candidate. That is the calculation layer.

“Therefore this person belongs in government” skips the interpretation layer. We still need to know whether Jia Wood has seasonal and rooted support, whether Resource connects Officer to the Day Master, how Output interacts with Officer, and whether combinations or clashes redirect the Month Command. A teaching example without a complete birth chart cannot establish formation, usefulness, a career, or a future event.

A six-step checklist for your own chart

1. Locate the Day Master: it is the reference point for every Ten-God relation.
2. Locate the Month Branch and season: use the solar-term Month Pillar, not a Gregorian month label.
3. Open the Month Branch’s Hidden Stems: distinguish main, middle, and residual qi and the school’s assumptions.
4. Check exposure and branch formations: identify what connects visibly, through roots, or through combinations.
5. Test support and obstruction: compare generation, drainage, control, roots, combinations, and clashes with the candidate.
6. Translate only into observable life questions: look for repeated ways of handling duty, output, resources, and learning.

Do not declare a Following, Transforming, or other special structure because one phase is numerous or the Day Master looks weak. These categories require strict conditions such as extreme concentration, absent or ineffective support, and specific transformation requirements; schools disagree on their thresholds. For a beginner, documenting ordinary structure evidence is safer and more useful than searching for an exceptional label.

In one sentence

Open your own chart and locate the Day Master and Month Branch. Before trying to guess a structure name, mark the Month Branch’s Hidden Stems, what is exposed, where the Day Master is rooted, and how generation and control move. A label then becomes a disciplined question about what to inspect next instead of a shortcut that chooses a career.
