Geokguk

Your Saju's Structure and Social Role Decoded

Mystic Universe · 2026년 04

What is Geokguk (格局)?

"You have Jeongkwan-Gyeok — you shine inside organizations." "Your Sikshin-Gyeok means creative work suits you best." These are phrases you encounter often in Saju readings, and they all originate from one concept: Geokguk (格局).

Geokguk is the innate structural format of your Saju chart, determined by the Monthly Branch (Wolji). Gyeok (格) means "format" or "grade" — the pattern by which your chart operates. Guk (局) means the overall structure and flow, like the full layout of a board game. Together, Geokguk answers the question: "How does this person's chart engage with the world?" — it is the social blueprint that reveals your role and direction in life.

Key concept:
Geokguk is your innate role and capacity, set at birth. While Okbu Yongsin (suppression-nourishment) governs inner balance, Geokguk is the compass pointing to "how and where your talents unfold in society." Career choices, relationship styles, and success paths all flow from your Geokguk.

How to Determine Your Geokguk

The entire process starts from one principle — identifying the primary hidden stem (Bonggi) in the Monthly Branch (Wolji). The month you were born holds multiple Heavenly Stem energies in its Earthly Branch, and the core energy (Bonggi) determines your Geokguk.

1
Find your Monthly Branch (Wolji): Locate the Earthly Branch in the Month Pillar of your Saju chart.
2
Extract the primary hidden stem (Bonggi): Look up the hidden stems of your Monthly Branch and find the primary one (the final, most dominant energy). Example: Monthly Branch 午(O) → primary hidden stem 丁 (Jeong-hwa, Yin Fire)
3
Check for Tukan (stem emergence): See if the Bonggi appears in any of the four Heavenly Stems of your chart (Year, Month, Day, Hour). If it does, determine the Ten God (Sipseong) relationship between that stem and your Day Stem — that is your Geokguk. Example: Bonggi Jeong-hwa appears in the stems, Day Stem is 甲 Gab-mok (Yang Wood) → Jeong-hwa is a Sangkwan (Hurting Officer) to Gab-mok → Sangkwan-Gyeok
4
If no Tukan exists: Check for emergence of secondary or initial hidden stems in order, or determine the Geokguk directly from the Ten God relationship between the Monthly Branch itself and the Day Stem.
5
Check for Chung (clash): If the Monthly Branch is clashed by another Earthly Branch, the Geokguk breaks. A clashed structure is unstable or invalid.
What is Tukan (透干)?
Tukan means a hidden stem inside an Earthly Branch emerges visibly in the Heavenly Stems of your chart. When this happens, that energy is activated and operates structurally as your Geokguk. Hidden stems that do not emerge remain as latent, unexpressed potential.

The 10 Geokguk Types and Their Traits

Traditionally there were 8 types, but modern Saju practice has settled on 10 standard Geokguk formats, including the two Bigeop-based formats (Geongrok and Yangin). Each is defined by which Ten God the Day Stem finds in the Monthly Branch.

🏆
Geongrok / Yangin 建祿格 / 羊刃格
Strong identity Independence Public service
Bigeop Format (Geongrok / Yangin): The same Five Element as the Day Stem occupies the Monthly Branch. This produces a strong sense of self and fierce independence. Well suited to roles in government, public institutions, or large organizations. Geongrok-Gyeok brings stable competence; Yangin-Gyeok carries a sharp, blade-like drive to execute. These types resist taking orders and prefer to decide for themselves.
🎨
Sikshin Format 食神格
Creativity Expression Production
Sikshin-Gyeok: The Day Stem generates an element of the same yin-yang polarity in the Monthly Branch. Strong creative energy and a gift for production. Suits cooking, arts, content creation, and teaching — any work that involves making and sharing. Optimistic by nature and resilient under pressure. With Wealth Stars present, this structure steadily accumulates resources over time.
Sangkwan Format 傷官格
Rebellion Innovation Artistic
Sangkwan-Gyeok: The Day Stem generates an element of the opposite yin-yang polarity in the Monthly Branch. Carries a rebellious instinct toward established order and a drive to innovate. Excels in arts, sports, law, and journalism where originality is rewarded. Because it "injures" Officer Stars, it can clash with corporate culture, but with balanced Officer energy, it transforms into powerful momentum.
💰
Jeongjae Format 正財格
Rational Stable wealth Planned
Jeongjae-Gyeok: The Day Stem controls an element of the opposite yin-yang polarity in the Monthly Branch. A strong drive to pursue wealth through rational, methodical means. Builds assets steadily without waste, following a clear plan. Unlike Jeongin-Gyeok, actively seeks opportunities. Well suited to finance, accounting, and real estate.
🌊
Pyeonjae Format 偏財格
Mobility Intuition Entrepreneur
Pyeonjae-Gyeok: The Day Stem controls an element of the same yin-yang polarity in the Monthly Branch. Outstanding instinct for sensing money flows. Quick, mobile, and sharp-eyed, they move fast when an opportunity appears. Strong in business, investment, sales, and trade — fluid environments. A high-risk, high-reward profile; larger fortunes can arrive, but stability is lower than Jeongjae-Gyeok.
🏛️
Jeongkwan Format 正官格
Organization Honor Stability
Jeongkwan-Gyeok: The element that controls the Day Stem, of the opposite yin-yang polarity, occupies the Monthly Branch. Represents the "upright official" — building honor and reputation through organizational norms. Well suited to civil service, large corporations, and institutional roles. When Officer and Resource Stars create the Officer-Resource Creation cycle, this structure flourishes greatly. Leadership ability and a strong sense of responsibility earn deep trust from organizations.
⚔️
Pyeonkwan Format 偏官格
Military/Medical Discipline Execution
Pyeonkwan-Gyeok (Seven Killings): The element that controls the Day Stem, of the same yin-yang polarity, occupies the Monthly Branch. Creates intense inner pressure and stress, but builds formidable strength through endurance. The aptitude for sharp, forceful roles — military, prosecution, medicine, and competitive sports. When Resource Stars are present, the Killing-Resource Creation cycle transforms this into immense capability.
📚
Jeongin Format 正印格
Academia Mentor Stability
Jeongin-Gyeok: The element that generates the Day Stem, of the opposite yin-yang polarity, occupies the Monthly Branch. Highly developed analytical thinking and a deep love of learning. Well matched to professors, teachers, and researchers who transmit knowledge. Life pace is deliberate and stability-oriented, with a nurturing, mentor-like character. Wealth Star cycles can destabilize this structure, so awareness is important.
🔮
Pyeonin Format 偏印格
Insight Unique talent Intuition
Pyeonin-Gyeok (Inverted Resource): The element that generates the Day Stem, of the same yin-yang polarity, occupies the Monthly Branch. Characterized by unique intuition and deep insight. Excels in distinctive, specialized fields — psychology, philosophy, divination, and unconventional arts. Unlike Jeongin-Gyeok's linear thinking, this type reasons non-linearly. Because it suppresses the Output Star, success comes through specialized skill and unusual sensibility rather than steady, conventional effort.

The One Condition: No Clash (Chung)

Geokguk is rooted in the Monthly Branch, but there is one critical requirement: the Monthly Branch must not be clashed (Chung) by another Earthly Branch in the chart.

For example, if your Monthly Branch is 子 (Ja, Rat) but your chart contains 午 (O, Horse), the Ja-O clash destabilizes the Monthly Branch energy. In this case the Geokguk becomes unstable or invalid. A clashed format makes it difficult for those inherent qualities to manifest, and the life direction and social role may appear unclear or inconsistent.

Valid Geokguk: Monthly Branch is not clashed; the Bonggi or Tukan stem sits stably in the chart.

Broken Geokguk: Monthly Branch is clashed by another Earthly Branch. When this occurs, the chart must be reinterpreted through the lens of Yongsin (useful god) and Okbu (suppression-nourishment balance).

Geokguk vs. Okbu Yongsin — What's the Difference?

Students of Saju often confuse Geokguk and Okbu Yongsin. They are complementary, but they operate at different levels.

Geokguk (格局)
Monthly Branch-based
Social direction
"In which arena will your talents unfold?"
Career compass, external success
Okbu Yongsin (抑扶用神)
Full Five Element balance
Inner equilibrium
"What keeps your life stable and fulfilled?"
Health, psychology, fortune flow

Even with Jeongkwan-Gyeok, if the Day Stem is too weak, Okbu Yongsin calls for strengthening the Day Stem. Even with Sikshin-Gyeok, if the Output Star dominates excessively, controlling energy is needed as Yongsin. Geokguk tells you what to do; Okbu Yongsin tells you how to stay balanced while doing it. The best Saju reading uses both perspectives together.

How to Find Your Geokguk — Quick Summary

It may sound complex, but following this sequence makes it straightforward.

  1. Locate your Monthly Branch (Wolji) in your Saju chart.
  2. Find the primary hidden stem (Bonggi) of the Monthly Branch. (Example: 子 → 癸, 午 → 丁, 申 → 庚)
  3. Check whether that stem appears in the Heavenly Stems of your chart (Tukan).
  4. Identify the Ten God relationship between the Tukan stem and your Day Stem. That relationship name is your Geokguk.
  5. Confirm the Monthly Branch is not clashed. If clashed, the Geokguk may be unstable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Geokguk in Saju?
Geokguk (格局) is the structural format of your Saju chart, determined by the Monthly Branch and its hidden stems. It reveals your innate social role, the arena where your talents naturally manifest, and your life's directional blueprint — distinct from Okbu Yongsin, which addresses inner balance.
How is Geokguk determined?
Geokguk is determined by the main Earthly Branch hidden stem (Bonggi) of the Monthly Branch (Wolji). If that stem appears in the Heavenly Stems of your chart (called Tukan), the Ten God relationship between it and your Day Stem gives the Geokguk name. If no Tukan exists, use the relationship between the Monthly Branch itself and the Day Stem. The Monthly Branch must not be clashed (Chung) for the Geokguk to be valid.
Why do people with the same Geokguk live such different lives?
Geokguk sets the directional blueprint, but the actual expression is shaped by the full combination of all eight characters, plus the flow of decade cycles (Daeun) and annual cycles (Seun). For example, Jeongkwan-Gyeok flourishes with Resource Stars that create the Officer-Resource Creation cycle, but becomes a stress structure if Officer Stars are too many or the Day Stem is weak. Geokguk must always be read within the full chart context.

In-Depth Geokguk Analysis — Knowledge-Based Interpretations

The following content is drawn from our actual Saju knowledge database, offering paired comparisons, special format explanations, and a guide to the Geokguk-Yongsin relationship.

Geokguk Paired Comparison Table

Even within the same Five Element family, Jeong (proper) and Pyeon (indirect) types differ dramatically. Compare their core traits below.

PairJeong (Proper) — Stability & PrinciplePyeon (Indirect) — Challenge & Change
Jeongkwan-Gyeok vs Pyeonkwan-Gyeok The "proper officer." Values principles, ethics, and order within organizations. Suited for government or corporate management roles. When the Officer-Resource Creation cycle (Gwanin-Sangsaeng: Officer → Resource → Self) forms, great success follows. Tends to be steady and methodical, with consistency as a key strength. Strong in sharp, specialized fields: military, law enforcement, medicine. A suppressive psychology drives constant self-discipline and internal pressure. When supported by Resource Stars, it transforms into the powerful Salin-Sangsaeng (Killer-Resource Creation) structure with formidable execution.
Jeongjae-Gyeok vs Pyeonjae-Gyeok The steady accumulator. Builds wealth through stable income and diligent management. Jeongjae is slow but certain — excels with savings, salaries, and long-term financial planning rather than speculative investments. Bold calculation and keen instincts. Quick-witted with razor-sharp perception. Highly agile and perceptive, but wealth doesn't follow intelligence alone — it follows consistency. Thrives in volatile fields: speculation, entrepreneurship, and trading.
Jeongin-Gyeok vs Pyeonin-Gyeok Strong cognitive and analytical psychology. Known for a "scholarly" temperament — deeply empathetic and contemplative rather than lazy. Excels in academia, education, and research. Processes ideas slowly but thoroughly. Insight-driven psychology. Intuitive, original thinkers who dive deep into specialized fields. However, Pyeonin-Gyeok requires careful verification: the hidden stem (Jijanggan) must properly manifest through Tukan (transparent stems) for this format to be valid.
Siksin-Gyeok vs Sanggwan-Gyeok Siksin represents production, creativity, and sharing. Optimistic and stress-resistant. When food god energy dominates the chart, life becomes a structure of constant creation. Combined with Wealth Stars, it forms Siksin-Saengjae (Food God Creates Wealth) — a stable prosperity structure. Sanggwan channels competitive energy through expression. Characterized by strong stubbornness and a "can't stand losing" personality. Suited for sports, military, police — roles involving protection and competition. Academically competitive, but focus wavers when the heart is elsewhere.

Special Formats — Geonrok-Gyeok, Yangin-Gyeok & Jong-Gyeok

Among the standard formats, these three hold special status due to their unique structural requirements.

🏛️
Geonrok-Gyeok (Building Fortune Format)
Geonrok-Gyeok forms when the Day Stem's prosperity star (Rok) sits in the Monthly Branch. It takes Pyeonkwan (Indirect Officer) as its Yongsin. When Wealth Stars feed the Indirect Officer (Jaesaeng-Sal), the person is destined for public service, large organizations, and roles of institutional responsibility. The saying "nothing is private" captures this format — it's built for receiving state compensation, not solo ventures. When Resource Stars join, the Salin-Sangsaeng structure creates solid technical expertise and practical competence.
🗡️
Yangin-Gyeok (Blade Format)
The character (blade) in Yangin literally means "knife edge." This format appears primarily in Yang Day Stems (Gap, Byeong, Mu, Gyeong, Im) — Yin Day Stems do not qualify. Considered the most challenging of all formats, Yangin-Gyeok grants extreme decisiveness and execution power. Like Geonrok-Gyeok, it's meant for institutional roles. With the Jaesaeng-Sal structure and Resource Star support, it produces formidable operational capability within organizations.
🌊
Jong-Gyeok (Follower Format)
Jong-Gyeok belongs to the special chart category, not standard charts. It forms when the Day Stem is extremely weak and cannot sustain itself, so it "follows" (Jong) the dominant force in the chart. Unlike standard charts that use Eokbu (suppression-support), Johu (seasonal balance), Tonggwan (bridging), or Byeongyak (illness-cure) methods, Jong-Gyeok has its own dedicated Yongsin system (including one-element, two-element, and combination-transformation formats). The element being followed becomes the Yongsin, and prosperity arrives when that element strengthens in the cycle.

How Geokguk Determines Yongsin

Once the Geokguk is set, how is the Yongsin decided?

Geokguk reveals the strongest force in the eight characters. Yongsin is the key element that either balances the format or empowers it.

Standard charts use four Yongsin methods:
Eokbu (Suppression-Support) — If strong, drain or control; if weak, support and nourish
Johu (Seasonal Balance) — The element that balances the season's temperature and moisture
Tonggwan (Bridging) — The element that connects two clashing elements
Byeongyak (Illness-Cure) — The "medicine" element that treats the chart's "illness"

Special charts (Jong-Gyeok, combination-transformation formats, etc.) treat the dominant element itself as the Yongsin. For example, Geonrok-Gyeok and Yangin-Gyeok both take Pyeonkwan as their Yongsin, and prosperity manifests when format-specific auspicious structures like Gwanin-Sangsaeng or Jaesaeng-Sal form.
