A free reading handed you a row of ominous star names and you came looking for what they mean? Look closer — a healing star and an honour star are sitting in that same list.

This article asks one question: why does one person mention Gwaegang almost as a boast while another tries to hide it? Once you know the answer, you stop counting the ominous names and start asking where to put the force.

The short answer: a list of strength, not of misfortune

The proof is in the list itself. Among these twenty sit a talent for healing (Healer Star), honorable stability (Honor Star), wealth through connections (Social Wealth), and light in darkness (Moon’s Gift). All four are described plainly as auspicious in the very data this service calculates from.

If the group were only bad omens, those names would have nowhere to sit. The current is called "challenge" not as a grade of good and bad but as a mark that the force lands hard. For the whole map of all three currents, start at the complete sinsal guide.

Five currents, five different forces

"Challenge" is not one lump. Our calculation sorts the twenty into five currents: six of power, four of movement, five of trial, four of spirit, and one of relation.

Knowing the current changes how you read the same "you have ominous stars." Power points to the size of a force, movement to a tendency to change seats, trial to what is blocked or left empty, spirit to a sense that reaches the unseen, and relation to the pull and push between people.

Save the table and simply find which row holds your star — that is half the reading done. The headline star of the movement current has its own article at Yeokmasal, and the single entry in the relation current at Wonjinsal.

Power stars — the seat matters more than the size

This is the most misread current. Gwaegang, Baekho and Yangin are all explained with the word "strong," yet what actually decides the outcome is where that strength was placed.

Namuwiki notes that Yanginsal was treated as ominous in a feudal society, as a force that broke shared order, but that in modern society you need exactly that kind of strength to protect yourself. Baekhosal tells a similar story: it was once the only star grand enough to carry the title "great sal," and the same article observes that today it draws far less concern.

In practice, reading Baekhosal as an occupational aptitude is widely done — placed in a field that demands hard drive, the same energy turns into results. That view cannot be traced to a specific source, so this article records it only as a commonly held perspective.

Trial stars — not what you lose but what sits empty

Geopsal, Jaesal, Wolsal, Cheollajimang and the Void read like accident forecasts if you go by name alone. What they actually point to is not an event but a seat.

The Void is the clearest. It is not a star that takes something away; it marks a place left open. Empty also means there is room to fill, so the same Void reads completely differently depending on which pillar it lands in.

Why anything is left empty becomes obvious once you count. There are ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches. Pair them in order and ten make one round, leaving two branches without a partner. Those two leftover branches are the Void of the round your day pillar belongs to. How the sixty pairs are built is set out in stems and branches.

Our calculation works the same way: it derives those two branches, then looks for them in the three seats other than the day branch— year, month and hour. The day branch is the reference used to derive the Void, so it is excluded. "My day branch is void" therefore does not arise in this calculation.

Wolsal being recorded as "light in darkness" belongs to the same logic. Sitting in the trial current does not make the content itself dark. You need to know which elements help you before you can judge the direction of these stars, and that method belongs to the yongsin guide.

Spirit, movement, relation — the remaining nine

The four spirit stars (Heaven’s Will, Healer Star, Ghost Gate, Lone Phoenix) mark seats where perception opens wide. Turned outward, that same sensitivity becomes a talent for reading other people first — the Healer Star. Turned only inward, it drains. Direction decides the outcome in this current.

The four movement stars (Dynamic Voyager, Social Wealth, Honor Star, Pioneer Spirit) describe a tendency to change seats. That honorable stability and a wealth-bearing network sit here matters: changing seats is not drifting but widening a radius.

The relation current holds one star, Wonjinsal. It is the only one of the twenty that points directly at attraction and repulsion between people, which is why it comes up so often in compatibility readings.

Myth 1: many ominous stars mean a hard life

A count is not a grade. Six ominous stars means six seats where force lands hard among your eight characters — not six hardships on a schedule.

A chart with no such stars is not automatically an easy one either. Few distinct features can also mean few distinct places to push.

Myth 2: ominous stars have to be removed

Sinsal are not objects that attach and detach; they are names for arrangements among your eight characters. The arrangement cannot be deleted, so "removing" one is not a coherent idea.

What is needed is a direction to use it in. Rather than pouring water on hot iron to make it go away, setting it on the anvil and drawing out an edge is closer to how this current is handled.

Myth 3: there are no good stars among them

The table above refutes this directly. A talent for healing, honorable stability, wealth through connections and light in darkness are all inside these twenty.

Namuwiki itself records Banansal as "one of the few sal regarded as auspicious."The evidence that a name ending in "sal" cannot settle the question is already sitting in the list.

Why Gwaegang appears on one site and not another

Among the stars of challenge, Gwaegang is where results diverge most often. The cause is not your chart but how many stem-branch pairs are counted as Gwaegang.

This article does not rule on which is correct. But if you have a Mujin or Musul day pillar and have seen Gwaegang appear on one site and not another, this is where the difference comes from.

Checking them in your own chart

These stars do not appear by magic either. Each current has its own starting seat, and knowing it lets you verify for yourself why a star showed up.

Even within "challenge," the methods differ this much. A star like Leader's Command is settled by one stem-branch pair on the birth day and is the easiest to check; Fearless Drive requires scanning all four pillars; Sharp Intuition is decided by counting characters. Sources and how the evidence was handled

The twenty rows above were transferred by matching this service’s own sinsal calculation data against its knowledge dataset, one to one. The counts per current — six power, four movement, five trial, four spirit, one relation — were taken from that same data, and for Gwaegang and Baekho we opened the stem-branch lists in the judging code directly. The modern reassessment of Yangin and Baekho, and the note that Banansal is regarded as auspicious, come from the Namuwiki article on saju sinsal, last edited 1 August 2026.

Three things are left undecided. First, whether Gwaegang counts four pairs or six is a point of disagreement between schools, so this article states only that our calculation uses the six-pair convention. Second, reading Baekhosal as an aptitude for military, medical or legal work is widely done in practice but cannot be traced to a specific source, so it is recorded only as a commonly held perspective. Third, we did not open the classics that carry Gwaegang and Baekho to compare wording directly — which is why not one classical quotation appears in this article.

In the course of checking, we found an error in the previous version of this article. Its title and description said "21 stars," while the calculation data gives twenty. The extra one came from filing the Early Bloomer under challenge; the calculation data files it under talent. To keep that drift from recurring, a check now compares these published numbers against the calculation data.
